THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF TOURISM ON LOCAL LIVING CONDITIONS IN SPAIN

This paper analyses how the growth of tourism in Spain from 2010 to 2020 is connected to national living conditions. Annual data on tourist arrivals, GDP, housing prices, the Gini index, tourism employment, and crime rates were collected from the World Bank and OECD and examined using linear regressions. The results show a positive relationship between tourism and employment, which means that more tourists usually create more jobs. However, the connection between tourism and housing prices is weak at the national level, suggesting that negative effects are more local and harder to measure in country-level data. Overall, the analysis shows that tourism supports Spain’s economy, but it does not improve daily life equally for all residents.
